Best Workplaces in Health Care: Driven by Pride

Best Workplaces

Great Place to Work® is pleased to announce the 2020 list of Canada’s Best Workplaces in Healthcare. To be eligible for this list, organizations must be Great Place to Work- Certified™ in the past year, and work in the health care sector. We determined the BEST based on employee responses to our Trust Index Survey.

Canada’s health care sector includes not only those working in the front lines of patient care, but those who support health care including pharmaceuticals and medical technology. It is estimated that nearly 15% of Canadians work in this sector.

The global pandemic has brought many of these front line and peripheral roles to the forefront. Now, more than ever, it is critical that healthcare employees are motivated and supported to bring their best to work. When we asked employees working at the Best Workplaces in Healthcare what makes their workplaces great, the most common theme we heard was a sense of pride in their organization, their work and the communities they serve.

At the Best Workplaces in Health Care, 91% of employees agree with the statement “I’m proud to tell others I work here”.

When employees have a positive view of their organization and its reputation in the larger community, they are more committed to the organization and enjoy telling others about it. Last year, Klick produced their first ever Klick Yearbook to celebrate a ‘year in the life’ of their company and their amazing team.

Personalized for every employee, it pulled individual employees' specific pictures, milestones, achievements and other noteworthy events. These were presented in a high school style yearbook and provided a unique commemoration of the year at Klick. Employees were encouraged to sign each others year books and have fun reminiscing over the pictures.

“I have never been more proud of my workplace, and it’s hard to get me to stop talking about how great it is during family gatherings or talking about workplaces with friends. It's been a great experience, and I feel amazing about the people I work with and what we do.”

At the Best Workplaces in Health Care, 89% of employees agree with the statement “When I look at what we accomplish, I feel a sense of pride”.

By connecting all employees to patient outcomes, regardless of what role they fill, the Best Workplaces in Healthcare make sure their employees have a strong connection with their higher purpose: their patients.

Every year, Medtronic invites patients with their physicians to share the life impact they have had from a Medtronic device or technology with their employees. This is called the Holiday Program and it is an extremely powerful and emotional experience in everyone’s working experience at Medtronic. The standing-room-only crowd hears from patients who inspire and motivate employees with comments of gratitude.

One of the critical elements that makes this organization unique is the fact that its products directly benefit the lives of patients… What I do every day has a direct and positive impact on patients’ lives.  Every two seconds someone in the world positively benefits from a Medtronic therapy or technology. .”

At the Best Workplaces in Health Care, 89% of employees agree with the statement “I feel good about the ways we contribute to community”.

At its core, the healthcare industry is about serving communities, and team-based volunteering is a natural extension of this purpose. Each year, Astellas employees participate in Changing Tomorrow Day, an annual day of service that underscores Astellas’ dedication to making a difference in the communities where they work and live.

All employees have the opportunity to participate in organized, local corporate social responsibility activities. While benefitting local communities, Changing Tomorrow Day is also beneficial to volunteers, allowing them to learn first-hand about interaction and coexistence within their respective communities.

Astellas gives me an opportunity to take paid time off to volunteer and give back to my community. This is quite a unique opportunity that I haven't seen in other companies where I worked.”
